Return of The Light

Today is the Winter Solstice. The day when night is at it's longest and light begins to once again win the battle. I can sure tell you it's not winning today, but slowly it will return.
On this short gray winter's day it seems like a good time to look at a few year end projects & give a bit of an overlook of 2006...
My last bit of Christmas Knitting is officially finished; knit, ends tucked in, blocked, and even has my tag sewn in.

Dec2006_009

This spring I came up with a basic Double-knit scarf pattern. It features a 'color in your own pattern' chart & when it's released I'm planning to include sample charts for the 4 scarves I have/will knit from it. The 4th and final Double-knit scarf is now sketched out & will be the most complex of them all. I'm planning on using 3 or 4 colors (2 at a time) in a water garden design.
This scarf was knit in Alpaca with a Twist, Baby Alpaca, 2 balls each of white & black.
This particular scarf would be a great first double-knit scarf. There is very little switching of colors in one row. Only 2 of the 3 black key rows require you to switch the main color once in the row. The pattern is also really easy to memorize! Especially if you're familiar with the order of keys on a piano.
I'm also working away at my very own pair of Thrummed Socks...
It's Socks in a Box~

Dec2006_005
I'm using my own hand-dyed Superfine Merino Roving & Art Yarns UltraMerino 4.
The box is from Namaste Needles. They come with a big candle, but my circular needle & all my sock stuff fit in it much better (plus the candle can't be used while in the box)...

Okay, and if you'd like to see my answers to the Year in Review Meme just click for the extended post.

1. What is your absolute favorite project you've ever knit (one that fulfilled both process and product)?
I think my socks that were knit with my own hand spun yarn was the most satisfying project. Knowing that I did everything short of sheering the sheep is so cool!

2. Which of your handknits do you wear the most often?
My socks... all of them. I don't wear any socks that aren't handknit (or my special pair Lynn dyed for me) ... I guess I'm a sock snob.

3. Which of your handknits are you most proud of?
My vertical Garter stitch Norsk Sweater. I don't really wear it, but trust me, finishing it was a huge deal. I still have the pads and pads of yellow paper that hold all the math that made that sweater work.

4. What was your favorite gift to knit?
I love knitting double knit scarves for gifts. There's the one mentioned earlier in this post, plus these two that I knit for my Actors (Scar & Zazu) during the Lion King.

5. Which of your handknits are gathering dust your closet?
Probably my Norsk sweater.. I tried to display it at the store, but everyone wanted to knit one. The lack of a pattern kinda quashes that idea...

6. Which of your handknits have you gotten rid of?
Other than ones that were meant for gifts, none.

7. If you've knit socks, what is your favorite pattern?
I had 2 sock patterns published this year, so I'm going to shamelessly self  promote those first.
Slink Socks over at Magknits, and Iris Garden over at the Six Sox Knitalong.
I also love the sock patterns from Keyboard Biologist & anything by Nancy Bush.

8. What would you like to make in 2007?
2007 is the year of the book. My goal is to have a book project on my needles at all times starting January first. I will also have a project for myself on the needles at all times. As well as a shawl & a pair of socks on the needles at all times. That's pretty much usual.
I would like to knit several practical sweaters for myself next year. Probably several machine washable, topdown, raglan or yolk, easy as pie, basic sweaters. Maybe I'll throw a few color work bands or cables in them, but I just want some sweaters I can wear any day.

9. What have you learned about your craft in 2006?
I learned how much time you can find to knit, even when your insanely busy. I finished Rogue my Knitting Olympics sweater in 1/2 the allotted time because I knew I was really busy & thought I'd found a challenging sweater to finish given my seeming lack of knitting time. I still blew through that sweater, and quite a few other projects during the Olympics.

10. What events/sites have you particularly enjoyed in the blogosphere in 2006?
I really enjoyed Knitting Olympics. Especially reading Stephanies musings at the end about how those of us who finished early learned that we underestimated ourselves &  I know I learned to aim higher in my knitting. Oddly Stephanie also prompted my other run of super speed knitting when I tried to knit a 6 stitch per inch tank top in 2 days to wear to her book signing. I didn't quite make it, but I bound off when I was waiting in line. That's pretty darn good.
I also really enjoyed taking part in the warm up the Dutchicans Knitalong
It was  amazing to see the outpouring of love (through knitted gifts) for these wonderful little babies whom many of the knitters have never met. I am lucky to know Kristi & am looking forward to watching the Dutchicans grow up.

Pat DeLeeuw:

Merry Christmas Rae!!!

I really really really love the scarf and the thrummed socks. Where will we be able to find out how to do that? A book? Selling the pattern on line? I would love to make those for next year's Christmas list... please do tell! And you do beautiful work.

Merry Christmas, Rae. Hope you're sleeping enough and eating just the right amount of just the right stuff to make you happy.

Beautiful finished scarf, my friend, just lovely. And super soft and warm, I'm sure!

Thrummed socks are the coolest idea in the world... must try this.

Rae, that scarf would be a perfect gift for my mother, who is a pianist. Pattern, pretty pretty please? Sometime soon, I pray, because her birthday is in March. I've been planning a pair of socks for her, but everybody got socks this year, and something oriented to her interests would be so much nicer.
